GC08 - UFC 2009 UNDISPUTED - DEVELOPER INTERVIEW

An introduction to the explosive fighter

Project Manager Neven Dravinski gives us an update on UFC® 2009 Undisputed...

How is development coming along? Development on the game is coming along great! We’re getting more and more models coming in, as well as new moves and submissions. We are really starting to see the game take shape, and the gameplay is evolving every day. This is the really exciting time; the fruits of our labor are coming into the game, which is really satisfying.

How many fighters are in the game? We will feature over 80 fighters spanning all five of the UFC’s weight classes. So far, we have announced Chuck Liddell, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Forrest Griffin, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva, Michael Bisping, Roger Huerta, Wanderlei Silva, Matt Hughes and even Amir Sadollah, winner of the recent seventh season of “The Ultimate Fighter.” We are still many months from launch and there will be more fighters announced, but rest assured fans will be able to have a great roster to work with when the game comes out.

The UFC's official tag line is "as real as it gets." What are you doing to embrace this in the game? “As Real as it Gets” is certainly part of our motivation at THQ. Visually speaking, players will see impressive in-game models complete with realistic injuries. We bring in the fighters for 3D scanning and high resolution photography sessions to create photorealistic representations of them in the game. We also have access to UFC’s production staff. Players will see the same presentation in the game as they would at a pay-per-view event, from broadcast graphics to camera angles. “As Real As it Gets” extends to the gameplay as well; our designers are training with UFC trainers to make sure that the fighter’s in-game moves are accurate. Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg are participating in the game as well, so players should prepare to hear some of the best sports commentary ever presented as they will make contextually accurate statements within fights. We are going to give people the most comprehensive UFC experience possible.

Can you give us a brief overview of what fans can expect in terms of gameplay controls? As we’re still a few months out from launch, our controls are still in a state of adjustment. We want players to master the controls and still make them accessible to pick up and play. Creating a control scheme for a mixed martial arts game creates unique challenges. We want to give the players the sense of struggle from any position inside the Octagon. As such, players will perform controller inputs analogous to the animations they are seeing on screen. Ultimately, we want players to feel like the controller is merely an extension of the on-screen character, as we are literally bringing the action to the player’s fingertips.

The ground game is expected to make a huge impact on gameplay. What can you tell us about it? The ground game is the thing that will really differentiate UFC 2009 Undisputed from other fighting games out there. While most fighting games offer very little in the way of ground combat, nearly half of UFC 2009 Undisputed combat will come from the ground, grapple and clinch positions. This presents a great challenge from a design, animation and technical perspective. However, our work with mixed martial arts trainers, great collaboration with the UFC and technical solutions like our combat physics system are all shaping up to create the best ground combat ever presented in a videogame.

What aspects of the game are you the most excited about? How can I be asked to pick among my children? In all fairness, I think the there are so many things to be excited about in this game. As a fan, I can’t get enough of watching my favorite fighters in the Octagon; I wish I could see guys like Anderson Silva and BJ Penn fight every week. When the game comes out, I can just see people fighting with their favorite guys over and over again. That’s something I think we are really going to be able offer people; any time anyone has wanted to see a fight between two certain people, they will have that opportunity just a button press away.

UFC 2009 Undisputed First Look Our thoughts on the reveal of the first UFC game in four years. Trailer included.

by Bill Barnwell

June 20, 2008 - "Everyone knows our first [video game] sucked."

"We were looking for a partner to help us squash the stigma of the old video game."

"This is going to be the best fighting game ever launched."

UFC president Dana White has a reputation for being a straight shooter. He also has a well-deserved reputation of taking everything he touches with the UFC brand and turning it into gold. When UFC: Sudden Impact came out in 2004, White and his business partners had just taken control of the company. Still under the terms of the video game agreement signed by the previous owners, White was forced to let Sudden Impact hit the market before the company's contract expired. Three years later, the company had gone from being considered human cockfighting in the national media to becoming an international phenomenon and household name. White signed a deal with THQ, who's been quietly at work putting together the base of a new UFC game ever since. They all came out this weekend in Las Vegas to reveal what appears to be the game that UFC fans have been waiting for.

Trailer HD: /p>

In our first look at UFC 2009 Undisputed, we were amazed at how much the game looked and sounded like an actual UFC event. The presentation of the game is downright impressive. Graphics don't look like their counterparts from UFC television and pay-per-view, they are their counterparts. You hear the swell of a medieval opera when the Tale of the Tape graphic appears, just like you do in UFC. Cameras swoop around the ring and shoot from the same angles. Everyone you'd expect to see at a UFC event is in the game, from the actual UFC ring girls to UFC referees to real cut men and cornermen. Mike Goldberg and Joe Rogan break down the action in their inimitable manner.

As for the fighters, well, we saw five, and to say that they looked authentic was an understatement. The crowd of gathered media and UFC officials audibly gasped at the photorealistic representations of B.J. Penn and Anderson Silva, two of the five fighters confirmed to be in the game as part of the 80+ fighter roster. Chuck Liddell was one of the other three, along with the other two fighters used for the demonstration of the game, both of whom were present at the press conference: UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, as well as his challenger for the title on July 5, Forrest Griffin.

While the two entertained with trash talk and commentary in the room as the game was being demonstrated, everyone was rightly focused on the gameplay and how the game handled. After procuring the license, THQ assigned Yukes Osaka to put together the game. Fear not, MMA purists: The game is built from scratch, so not a single line of code from THQ's Smackdown vs. Raw series or any other previous UFC game made its way into the new title.

The operative phrase that came up during discussion of the game was "Constant Control", the idea being that a UFC fighter must constantly be aware of his surroundings and situation, and must be ready to act at a moment's notice with a specific, contextual move, countermove, or defense. THQ's incorporated realistic fight strategies based upon UFC footage, which we saw in the demonstration fight. Rampage struck from a distance with his powerful jab and used a slam to get out of a Griffin armbar attempt from the guard, while Griffin peppered Jackson with short blows and then used "dirty boxing" from the clinch to wear down his opponent for a takedown. Each fighter in the game is given a particular grappling and striking technique they specialize in and use the moves of.

The game's mechanic is also different than both SvR or previous MMA games. There's no HUD or health bar, so fighters don't get worn down till they're eventually tapped out or KO'd. A fighter can be finished at any time, depending upon the situation. On the other hand, there are more defensive moves and blocking and countering in the game, with a design more similar to traditional fighting games than old MMA or wrestling games. THQ specifically stated that "...button mashing will make you lose."

Furthermore, the happenings of the fight actually have an effect on fighters during the fight beyond simply wearing them down. When Rampage used punches to the body to weaken Forrest, purple welts similar to what was seen on Liddell's body when he fought Keith Jardine appeared near Griffin's kidney. A small cut had formed over the former Ultimate Fighter's eye, while Rampage had his left eye nearly swollen shut by a series of excellent Griffin knees. All the injuries looked authentic, but also affected how successful each fighter was at accomplishing what they wanted to as the fight wore on.

As for the fight itself? Rampage KO'd Forrest with a right hook in the second round, with ref Mario Yamasaki preventing Rampage from following in with more strikes. The real-life Rampage howled in the room as his character did the same on the screen, followed by shots of Forrest's lights going out, his mouthpiece falling out, and the defeated fighter slumping to the canvas like a falling tree. Whether UFC 2009 Undisputed does the same thing to the memory of old MMA games is still up for debate, but what we saw in Las Vegas showed us that THQ has the right idea.

UFC 2009 Undisputed is set to release in spring of 2009. Stay tuned to IGN for all the details on the game over the coming months.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu).

************************************************** ***************

Chuck Liddell, Quinton ”Rampage” Jackson, Forrest Griffin, BJ Penn, Anderson Silva, Michael Bisping, Roger Huerta, Wanderlei Silva, Matt Hughes и Amir Sadollah заявлены среди персонажей игры.
